From first pushback, Scarborough came out strong against this Driffield side. However, so did the Driffield 2s with good linking play between the mids and forwards, being rewarded with a foot found in the D. Sadly, Driffield just missed out on converting the short corner with the deflection going just wide of the post. Scarborough then stepped up their game, scoring their first goal. Shaking this off, Driffield cracked on, with some great hits sent down the line by both Vikki Bannister and Kirstie Edmond to the awaiting forwards, Polly Burgess, Katie Lee, and Bronwyn Walker-Rouse. Despite the Driffield’s best efforts, they struggled to break down the Scarborough defence. A great run down the wing by Vikki Bannister earned a free hit just outside the D, but still they were denied a goal. Scarborough skilfully went on to score 2 goals in quick succession in the initial half.
Driffield set off into the second half hungry for goals, refreshed by the oranges and sweets provided by Kirstie and Vikki. Despite the pressure that Scarborough put the defence under, Driffield kept in the game due to some brilliant saves by Shanie Burton, expert tackles at the back by Charlotte Smith and Lucy Welburn, and the pressure applied by the mids Hannah Atkinson, Phoebe Goodlass, Bella Thompson, and Henri Williams. The team found their flow, with some great one twos played in triangles between Katie Lee, Polly Burgess, and Bronwyn Walker-Rouse. The skills of Hannah Atkinson were on show as she held the middle despite repeatedly being surrounded by three Scarborough players. Charlotte Smith made expert shave tackles to ensure Scarborough did not break successfully. Bella Thompson and Phoebe Goodlass made great runs down the left. Despite the many breaks Driffield had, however, the team couldn’t capitalise on them, as the Scarborough keeper and defenders continued to deny Driffield a goal.
The hard work rate of the team resulted in the second half being a draw with no goals for either side.
Unfortunately, due to Scarborough’s 3 goals in the first half, the end result was 0-3 to Scarborough.
