After only one training session, the u10 Girls set off to sunny Leeds University for their first league encounter of the season. With some last minute shuffles in the league, due to team’s unavailability, the girls found themselves in Division c.

First up were Ben Rhydding C team. Starting fast and furious, with some great interchange play between new players Emma and Beth, Driffield soon took the lead with a goal for Beth on her debut. Quickly followed by a second from Ella to secure the win 2-0.

Next up were Harrogate B. Again, Driffield were soon finding their quick passing game and some speedy wing work from Jess on the right enable Jae to score the first goal of the game at the back post. This spurred on the team and with some solid defending from Katy and Victoria, enabling the midfield of Emma, Jess and Jae to constantly charge forward,  another two goals soon followed for Emma (debut goal – well done) and a second for Jae. With some line-up changes made by the coaches, the girls continued to press and were rewarded with another goal for Beth and a hat-trick goal for Jae. Switching from defence to attack, Katie was not to be outdone by her team mates and scored the 6th and final goal of the game.

Full of confidence, the next opponents Selby proved a more difficult game. Some good attacking play by Driffield was thwarted by solid defending from the Selby team. Finally some intricate passing amongst the girls, led to a scorcher of a shot from Jess rebounding off the post, and Ella was quickest to react, poking the ball in under the goalkeeper for the 1-0 victory.

Last up for the girls was Ben Rhydding B team. Full of confidence and a few positional changes, gave all the girls experience of both defending and attacking.  Showing how their hard work and enthusiasm was paying off, goals from Jess (2), Emma and Jae (2) gave them a fourth win of the day 5-0.

An excellent day’s hockey from the girls, played with a smile on their faces, but with sheer determination throughout, meant they ended up top of Division C. Thanks to all parents and supporters who made the trip and saw some excellent hockey, and to Russ Lee for umpiring all morning.

Roll on November, when the girls will be in action next, again at Leeds Universities Weetwood Park.
